Essential Business Tax Deadlines in January 2026

The beginning of a new year signals a crucial time for businesses, particularly as they navigate January 2026's essential tax deadlines. This period is critical for ensuring compliance with tax obligations and mitigating the risk of penalties. Let's delve into the pressing due dates this month for employers, farmers, and fishermen.

January 15 - Employer’s Monthly Deposit Due -

If you are subject to the employer monthly deposit rule, it's imperative to make your December 2025 deposit by January 15. This involves Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income taxes. Note that employment tax deposits need to be submitted electronically, unless your deposit liability is under $2,500 for a return period, in which case you may remit payments with the return quarterly or annually.

January 15 - Farmers and Fishermen -

For farmers and fishermen, January 15 is also significant as it marks the due date for paying estimated taxes for 2025 via Form 1040-ES. While you have until April 15 to file your income tax return for 2025 using Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR, failing to pay estimated tax by January 15 requires filing your 2025 return and settling any tax liabilities by March 2, 2026, to avoid penalties.
