Essential Tax Deadlines in January 2026 for Individuals

As the new year begins, so do critical tax deadlines. January 2026 presents pivotal dates for individual taxpayers, including estimated tax payments, tip reporting, and strategic tax planning. Stay informed to ensure compliance and avoid unnecessary penalties.

January 2 - Schedule Your Tax Preparation Appointment

The start of January marks the beginning of tax season. If you haven't yet scheduled your tax preparation appointment, we strongly recommend doing so before the calendar fills up.

January 12 - Tip Reporting Deadline

If you're an employee receiving tips and have accumulated more than $20 in tips during December, you must report this amount to your employer by January 12. You can utilize IRS Form 4070 or a personalized statement including your signature, personal details, employer's name and address, the covered period, and the total tips received.

Your employer is required to deduct FICA taxes and income tax withholding from your regular wages for these tips. If your wages aren't enough to cover these withholdings, the uncollected amounts will be reported on your W-2 in box 8, which you must pay when filing your annual return.

January 15 - Fourth Quarter Estimated Tax Payment

This is the deadline for your fourth-quarter estimated tax installment for the 2025 tax year. Failure to make this payment by January 15 requires you to file your 2025 tax return and settle any tax liabilities by February 2, 2026, to avoid an estimated tax penalty.

Weekend and Holiday Adjustments

If any deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the due date will automatically extend to the next business day that isn't a legal holiday.
