March 2026 Tax Deadlines: Tip Reporting & Appointment Cutoffs

March marks the crucial halfway point of the tax filing season. While the April deadline looms on the horizon, there are immediate action items for specific taxpayers this month, as well as a critical logistical deadline for anyone who hasn't yet booked their preparation slot.

March 10: Deadline to Report Tip Income

If you work in the service industry and received more than $20 in tips during February, the IRS requires you to report that income to your employer by March 10. This is done using IRS Form 4070 (Employee's Daily Record of Tips).

You aren't required to use the official form if you have a substitute statement that includes:

  • Your signature, name, address, and Social Security number.
  • Your employer’s name and address.
  • The specific month covered and total tips received.

Why this matters: Your employer uses this report to withhold the correct FICA and income taxes from your regular paycheck. If your base wages can't cover the required withholding, the uncollected amount will show up in box 8 of your W-2, creating a tax liability you will have to settle when you file your annual return.

March 16: The Appointment "Safe Zone"

Virtual tax services appointment

We are approximately one month away from the individual filing deadline. If you have not yet secured a spot on our calendar, we strongly advise calling by March 16. Waiting longer significantly increases the risk of needing an extension due to volume constraints.

Don't Wait for Perfect Records

A common mistake clients make is waiting until they have 100% of their documents to call us. Please don't do this. Schedule the appointment now. If you are missing a stray 1099 or a receipt, we can simply flag it as an open item and move forward with the bulk of the return. It is much easier to fill in a few blanks later than to start a return from scratch on April 10.

If you suspect you will need more time, let's discuss filing an extension now. It is always better to prepare a preliminary return, estimate your liability, and pay any tax due by April to avoid interest and penalties.

Standard Deadline Rules

Weekends & Holidays: Following standard protocol, if a due date hits a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, you are automatically granted until the next business day.

Disaster Area Relief: The IRS frequently pushes deadlines for taxpayers in designated disaster zones. To check if your region qualifies for automatic extensions, please consult the official resources below:
