Tax Implications: Understanding Hobby vs. Business Income

When it comes to tax classification, distinguishing between a hobby and a business is crucial. If your activity is considered a hobby, the IRS mandates that you report income on line 8j (activity not engaged in for profit) on Schedule 1 of the 2025 Draft Form 1040. Unlike business income, hobby-related expenses are not deductible, which means that you can't reduce your taxable income through deductions as you would if the activity were classified as a business.
