The Waiting Game: How to Track Your Federal Tax Refund

Now that the filing deadline has passed or you have successfully submitted your return, the focus naturally shifts to one question: "When will the funds hit my account?" As you may have noticed, the IRS has aggressively moved away from paper checks in recent years. This isn't just about saving paper; it is a security measure designed to combat mail theft and expedite the flow of funds to taxpayers. While prepaid debit cards are an option for those without bank accounts, direct deposit remains the gold standard for speed.

Regardless of how you chose to receive your money, you do not need to stay in the dark. The IRS provides a robust tracking system for anyone expecting a refund.

Using the Official Tracker

The most reliable way to monitor your money is the Where’s My Refund? tool on the IRS website. Whether you split your refund across multiple savings accounts or sent it all to one checking account, this portal provides nearly 24/7 access to your status.

For clients who e-filed (which is the vast majority of our submissions), you can check the status just 24 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt. If you filed a paper return, the wait is significantly longer—data typically appears four weeks after mailing. Generally, nine out of 10 e-filed refunds with direct deposit land within 21 days.

What You Need to Check

Security is tight, so you cannot simply search by name. Before logging on, grab the copy of the federal tax return we prepared for you. You will need to enter:

  • Your Social Security Number (or ITIN),

  • The tax year (options currently include 2025, 2024, and 2023),

  • Your filing status (e.g., Married Filing Jointly, Single, Head of Household), and

  • The exact whole-dollar refund amount shown on your return.

Decoding Your Status

Once you are in the system, you will see one of three stages:

  • Return Received: They have it and are processing the numbers.

  • Refund Approved: They have finished processing and are scheduling the transfer.

  • Refund Sent: The money is on its way. Note that it may take your bank up to 5 days to clear the funds, or several weeks for a paper check to arrive.

Mobile Options and Accessibility

If you prefer checking via smartphone, the IRS2Go app is free and available for both Apple and Android devices. You can find download links directly at IRS2Go. Additionally, the online tool is compatible with the Job Access with Speech (JAWS) screen reader and refreshable Braille displays for visually impaired taxpayers.

A final note on patience: The system updates only once every 24 hours, usually overnight. Checking multiple times a day won't speed up the process. However, if your status has not moved and it has been more than 21 days since you e-filed (or if the tool directs you to contact the IRS), please reach out to our office so we can help you navigate the next steps.
